"All of reading is really only finding ways to name ourselves and, perhaps, to name the others around us so that they will no longer seem like strangers."
~~Anna Quindlen, How Reading Changed My Life
*Brought to you this week by several hours spent catching up on reading other blogs and several other hours spent working on the cheerleading-themed birthday cake for Fifth Niece's (surprise!) birthday party tomorrow.
You are pretty amazing, how you do that "catching up" thing. For some reason, I feel even more honored, when you stop in at four or five pieces, consecutively. That's dedication.
ReplyDeleteAnd I believe Anna was onto something there. I don't feel as though I am talking to a stranger.
Thanks, Mark. Sometimes I feel a little silly barraging folks with comments all at once like that so it's nice to know it's appreciated, not annoying.
DeleteAnd I definitely feel like we're all less and less strangers every day.
The naming that writers do fascinates me-- great quote! I so know what you mean about trying to keep up with reading great blogs, like yours.:)
ReplyDeleteHope that cake turned out fine!
It was a megaphone cake with pom-pom cupcakes. I was very surprised to learn exactly how time-consuming those cupcakes turned out to be. I have made some pretty elaborate cakes over the years (spaghetti & meatballs, sand castles, treasure chests, a variety of superheroes and cartoon characters, a princess castle, etc), so I thought I knew what I was getting into this time. Turns out those pom-pom cupcakes kicked my butt. :) They were a hit at the party though, so that's what counts.
DeleteP.S. I have fun opening a dictionary and picking a word at random for inspiration. Nasty little habit I picked up as a kid.
ReplyDeleteI'm a dictionary freak, as well. Nice to have good company!
